Wooden home build advice?

I'm just getting back into Minecraft and am currently beginning a survival world where I spawned on an island. I'm at the stage where I'm graduating from a hole in the wall to an actual house and I've hit a creativity wall for my house.

My goal is to build a little village with some small houses all with different purposes etc.

For my main house though, I'm struggling with how to make the walls not look boring. I have access to dark oak wood and normal oak wood and I'm trying to get a combination that looks nice.

Sounds awesome. I like the tribal idea. Do you have an example of how I could do this please?
